Principal investigator position in Nanomaterials for low carbon energy transition

Start Thu, 01 Dec 2022 End Thu, 13 Apr 2023

The Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia/Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) is pleased to announce one new tenure-track opening (open rank) in Nanomaterials for low carbon energy transition at the IIT Center for Sustainable Future Technologies in Turin (Italy).

We invite applications from a broad pool of diverse and dynamic, highly-motivated researchers to join our vibrant community of scientists. We seek creative thinkers who transcend traditional scientific boundaries, with the overarching goal of combining science and technology to improve human health.

We seek candidates who share our passion for challenging endeavours, that will contribute to make IIT a place of diversity in science and personal experience. We require absolute integrity and act always with social responsibility.

More specifically we are looking for candidates with outstanding track records in the following area.

Fundamental studies of nanomaterials for low carbon energy transition: synthesis and characterization of new sustainable nanostructures.

Candidates should have world-class expertise in basic research in the field of materials science and physics of matter for nanostructured materials to be applied in low carbon energy transition, with specific reference to new nanomaterials for CO2 valorization and/or for hydrogen production and use. Areas of interest are the basic research in new sustainable catalysts for CO2 and/or for hydrogen. A particular focus is required on knowledge of characterization techniques for nanomaterials and in-operando characterization techniques. Candidates should hold a PhD degree and relevant postdoctoral experience, as well as an excellent record of accomplishments (publications, etc.) in broad areas of materials science and physics of matter for energy. The ability to quickly establish and lead an independent, world-class research group is paramount.

Who we are?

IIT is a research foundation that promotes excellence in fundamental and applied science, fostering the evolution of industry towards the forefront areas of technological innovation. Top scientists and their teams, supported by all IIT personnel, develop cutting edge, human-centred science and technology, endorsing IIT values: integrity, societal responsibility, courage, and inclusion.

IIT has state-of-the-art facilities and has rapidly established itself among top research institutes worldwide. IIT has a strongly international character, with more than 40% foreign scientific staff drawn from over 50 countries worldwide.

What we offer

The new tenure-track scientist will be intellectually and financially independent (i.e., a true principal investigator) and will enjoy world-class start-up and operational funding, as well as internationally competitive salary and benefits. IIT also strongly encourages and assists its scientists in expanding their research scope by obtaining independent external support from national, European, and international funding agencies.

Hiring procedures of IIT are based solely on scientific credentials, and our search committees include external members from foreign institutions to provide diverse, independent perspectives. We encourage non-Italians and Italians, either abroad or already in Italy, to apply.

How to apply

The complete application must be submitted online by registering ad uploading all documents to this platform.

The application consists of a single PDF file containing:

  • C.V., including list of published papers, patents, and research grants directly awarded to the candidate (as principal investigator or work-package coordinator)
  • 3-page research statement containing a summary of previous research contributions and a description of plans for future work
  • Reference to five representative publications with regards to the scientific activity to carry out.

Applicants should also indicate name and contact information of three individuals who can provide letters of recommendation. IIT will contact referees directly.

For junior faculty applicants, referees will usually include the applicant’s PhD and postdoctoral advisor(s).

Deadline for submission of applications is April 13, 2023.

Deadline for submission of reference letters is April 30, 2023.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to IIT for an interview indicatively during the summer 2023.
