One Tenure-Track Position in Transmission Electron Microscopy and Spectroscopy

Start Fri, 15 May 2020 End Sat, 15 Aug 2020

The Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) is pleased to announce a new tenure-track opening (open rank).

IIT has state-of-the-art facilities and has rapidly established itself among the top research institutes worldwide. IIT has a strongly international character, with more than 50% of the scientific staff coming from over 60 countries worldwide.

IIT seeks dynamic, highly motivated, independent and innovative researchers to join its community of scientists engaged in cutting-edge research and development. Candidates must be creative thinkers who overcome traditional scientific boundaries, with the overarching goal of melding science and technology to improve human health, welfare and sustainability.

The tenure-track scientists are intellectually and financially independent principal investigators. At IIT they will enjoy world-class start-up and operational funding, as well as internationally competitive salaries and benefits. IIT also strongly encourages and assists its scientists in expanding their research scope by obtaining independent external support from national, European and international funding agencies.

Hiring procedures of IIT are based solely on scientific credentials, and our search committees include external members from foreign institutions to provide diverse and independent perspectives.

Application procedure:

To apply for the position candidates should register and upload their evaluation package (in a single PDF file) containing:

  1. a CV, including a list of published papers (with evidence of the 5 most representative publications), patents, and research grants directly awarded to the candidate (as principal investigator or work-package coordinator)
  2. a 3-page research statement containing 1) a summary of what the candidate considers as their most significant research contributions to date, b) the research directions that the candidate plans to follow in the next 5 years and the corresponding scientific rationale, c) examples of agencies and funding instruments that the candidate plans to apply to in the next 2-3 years.

Applicants should also provide names and contact information of three references, familiar with the applicant’s research accomplishments, to prepare letters of recommendation. For junior faculty applicants, references will usually include the applicant’s PhD and postdoctoral advisor(s).

The reference letters must be directly uploaded by their authors on the candidate’s application page and will made visible to the candidate.

Please note that the system allows candidates to submit complete applications only (i.e.: evaluation package and referees’ contact details). Partially completed applications or registrations will not be considered.

Deadline for submission of applications is August 15 2020

Please note that the deadline for submission of reference letters by references is August 31 2020

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to IIT for an interview.

Open positions

  • Transmission Electron Microscopy and Spectroscopy

IIT is looking for candidates with outstanding track records in Transmission Electron Microscopy and Spectroscopy for materials science and nanoscience, following the recent purchase of a new, state-of-art aberration corrected TEM/STEM electron microscope, with high-resolution EEL spectrometer and EDS system, which will be installed at IIT Center for Convergent Technologies in Genova (Italy) this coming summer.

The successful candidate will perform and supervise advanced experiments on the new microscope. He/she will be involved in the research activity of the Institute and will perform his/her own research related to electron microscopy techniques.

The candidate must have a PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or a related subject, and a proper post-doctoral experience in TEM and STEM and spectroscopic techniques in the (S)TEM. In particular, IIT seeks world-class established experience in:

    • TEM and STEM imaging with and without aberration correction, in particular on inorganic materials and nanostructures.
    • TEM and STEM Image simulation.
    • Electron energy loss spectroscopy in both filtering mode (EFTEM) and scanning mode (STEM-EELS) with consolidated experience in quantification techniques of EEL spectra and their modelling.
    • STEM-EELS experiments on plasmonic nanostructures.
    • EDS quantification and chemical mapping.
    • Electron tomography acquisition and reconstruction.

Ideal candidates will have expertise in both materials science research and development of new instrumentation and methods, and be enthusiastic about collaborating with colleagues of different expertise.
The ability to quickly establish and lead an independent, world-class research group is paramount.
A Ph.D. or equivalent graduate degree, as well as relevant postdoctoral experience are required at the time of application.
